Routine Cleaning

A gentle clean every few months is all most memorials need to stay looking their best. The good news is that granite is incredibly durable and low-maintenance.

What you'll need

  • Clean water – a bucket or large bottle
  • Soft cloth or sponge – avoid anything abrasive
  • Soft brush – for textured areas
  • Mild washing-up liquid – for stubborn marks (optional)

Simple cleaning steps

  • Step 1: Remove loose debris – leaves, grass clippings, bird droppings
  • Step 2: Wet the stone thoroughly with clean water
  • Step 3: Gently wipe with a soft cloth, working from top to bottom
  • Step 4: For stubborn marks, add a drop of washing-up liquid to your water
  • Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with clean water
  • Step 6: Allow to air dry naturally

Choose a mild day

Avoid cleaning in direct hot sunshine as water can evaporate too quickly and leave marks. An overcast day is ideal.

Care by Stone Type

Different stones have slightly different characteristics. Here's specific advice for the most common memorial materials.

Black Granite

Shows fingerprints and water marks more easily than lighter stones. Use a dry microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish after cleaning. The polished surface is very durable.

Grey Granite

Very forgiving and hides marks well. One of the easiest stones to maintain. Occasional cleaning with water is usually sufficient.

Red/Brown Granite

Natural variations in colour can hide minor marks. Clean as normal. Be aware that strong sunlight can slightly fade some red granites over many years.

White Marble

More porous than granite, so avoid acidic cleaners. Can develop a natural patina over time. Professional cleaning recommended for stubborn staining.

Seasonal Care Tips

The British weather affects memorials throughout the year. A little seasonal attention helps keep things looking their best.

Spring

Clear winter debris. Check for any bird nesting material. A good clean after winter.

Summer

Water flowers regularly. Clean any bird droppings promptly. Avoid cleaning in hot sun.

Autumn

Clear fallen leaves regularly. They can stain if left too long. Check kerbs for leaf build-up.

Winter

Let nature take its course. Avoid de-icing salts near the memorial. Wait for milder weather to clean.

Do's & Don'ts

A few simple rules to keep your memorial in the best possible condition.

Do

  • Use clean water and soft cloths
  • Clean on mild, overcast days
  • Remove debris regularly
  • Contact us if you notice damage
  • Use mild washing-up liquid for stubborn marks

Don't

  • Use pressure washers
  • Apply bleach or harsh chemicals
  • Use wire brushes or scouring pads
  • Attempt repairs yourself
  • Place metal objects directly on the stone

Never use acid-based cleaners

Products containing vinegar, lemon juice, or any acids can permanently damage and etch polished stone surfaces.

Caring for Lettering

The inscription is the heart of the memorial. Most modern lettering is very durable, but it deserves a little care.

Gold leaf and gilding

Traditional gold leaf will gradually weather over time – this is natural and expected. Re-gilding is typically needed every 10-20 years, depending on exposure. We offer a re-gilding service when the time comes.

Painted lettering

White, black, and coloured paint lettering is hardwearing but may need refreshing after 15-25 years. Touch-up paint can be applied, though we recommend professional application for the best finish.

Sandblasted lettering

Unpainted sandblasted lettering (where the natural stone contrast creates the letters) requires no maintenance and will last the lifetime of the memorial.

Adding more inscription?

If you need to add names or dates to an existing memorial, contact us. We can often add inscription on-site without moving the memorial.

When to Call Us

Some things are best left to the professionals. Get in touch if you notice any of these:

  • Faded or worn lettering – we can re-gild or repaint
  • Stubborn staining – some marks need professional treatment
